What is steoarthritis?

Arthritis is the most common rheumatic disorder, affecting approx. 25% of the population. In osteoarthritis patients, the cartilage in the joints is broken down progressively. Wear and tear is generally assumed to be the main cause of this. This is why the disease usually occurs in older people and/or after intensive use of the relevant joints.

Stheoarthritis is accompanied by a reduction in the quality and the amount of synovial fluid in the joint. This fluid lubricates the joints and plays an important role in shock absorption. The decrease in the synovial fluid results in the bones grinding together, which causes pain and inflammation. In later stages, it can even become impossible to use the affected joint constantly.

Medicinal treatment

Usually the treatment of osteoarthritis is symptomatic and aimed at reducing the pain and inflammation. Drugs such as painkillers, anti-inflammatory drugs and corticoids are commonly used for this. It has been known for some time that the injection of hyaluronic acid in the joint can cause an increase in the amount of the synovial fluid as well as an improvement in its quality. Hyaluronic is also the main component of naturally occurring synovial fluid. By injecting it, hyaluronic acid lubricates and protects the cartilage. Many osteoarthritis sufferers can benefit from treatment with hyaluronic acid.
